–

Grafton, Ohio

Donald “Don” Clair Knapp Sr., 81, of Grafton, Ohio, passed away on March 18, 2026. He was born on February 20, 1945, in Sullivan, Ohio.

Don spent much of his life in Elyria, Ohio, later living in Denver, Colorado, before returning to the Cleveland area, where he resided in his final years.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as part of a Construction Battalion (Seabees), serving with Unit CS3, including time aboard the USS Comstock (LSD-19) based in Long Beach, California. During his military service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with device. He also completed specialized training, including ECC for BMP, SN, MRPO 3&2, and CS3&2, as well as “CS 13” School.

Following his military service, Don began a long career with United Airlines in 1968.

In the later years of his life, Don gave his life to Jesus Christ. He spent time reading Scripture and grew in patience, thoughtfulness, and faith.

Don loved being around people and made the most of his time with friends and family. He had a competitive spirit and enjoyed any game or challenge, but even more, he valued the people around him. He was generous by nature and had a way of drawing others in, making sure everyone felt included.

Don is survived by his children, Sheri (Cody) Johnson of Laramie, Wyoming; Donald “Don” Knapp Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Jennifier (Eric) Hanly of Grand Junction, Colorado; his grandchildren, McCade and Emmy (children of Sheri), and Cal, Micah (Grace), Josiah, and Rachel (children of Jennifier); and his siblings, Hugh Knapp (Linda) and Lida.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Frances (Lee) Knapp; his sisters, Catherine Schramm, Jean Salva, and Mary Murray; and his brothers, Les Knapp and Edmond Knapp.

A memorial service will be held at Solid Rock Community Church at 10:30 a.m. on April 11 in Elyria, Ohio.
